Melbourne based Chatterton Lacework discovers the Iron Lace revival
Melbourne has more decorative cast iron than any other city in the world. By the 1880 period it symbolised the citys brash image, with virtually every new balcony and verandah being draped in an iron petticoat.
A noted English architecture critic John Ruskin commented cast iron was cheap and vulgar. His opinion did not effect Melbourne and and its cast iron heritage. Over 40 local foundries were kept busy melting and casting pig iron that arrived as ballast from the visiting ships. By 1900 these foundries had registered 161 different designs. Many of these intricate architectural designs are being manufactured today. Come and check out our extensive range of designs of balustrade and lacework all manufactured today in non rust aluminium.
